Christmas has become substantially commercialized, and it has merely become another item to cross off our checklist. From decor arrangements to purchasing presents, it’s easy to overlook the need for intentionality throughout this season. The preoccupation in preparing to spend time with our family may lead to losing sight of those around us that might not have family around them this Christmas. Immersing ourselves in solely purchasing presents for each other can make us oblivious to some who have never received a present in their life. Our home can become so centered on the lights that we scarcely recall the need to spread the light of Christ to those around us. Reflecting on how the same season of joy for some could be a season of pain or hurt for others who have perhaps experienced a loss of a loved one this year can allow us to reach those who may be hurting this season. The need to enable people to take precedence over things in this season is growing. Perhaps we need to challenge ourselves to view Christmas scarcely as a holiday but rather as an opportunity to reach those around us and spread joy in a meaningful way. As we wrap presents, let’s reflect on the fact that the real gift we received on Christmas, the gift of hope, wasn’t wrapped, but lay in a manger. With the year wrapping up, encourage yourself to utilize this season as an opportunity to bring joy to those around you intentionally.
8 Tips to be more intentional this Christmas season:
- Invite friends or family to spend Christmas with you who may not have family in the city.
- Reach out to those in need, make or buy gifts for the homeless or other local shelters.
- Donate to a non-profit.
- Have meaningful conversations with family or friends you are reconnecting with after a while.
- Bring baked goods or gifts to neighbours and connect with them, if you haven’t had a chance to get to know them.
- Text 5-10 people you haven’t talked to in a while to see how they are doing.
- Give your time and energy to those around you who may need it.
- Talk about the real reason of the Season.
